Record and import audio
Record with your Oak Note, or bring in audio from other apps.
You record with your Oak Note, the small device that pairs with the app. Start, talk, stop. Your recording then comes to your phone and becomes a note with a transcript, a summary, and to-dos, all on its own.
Record
With your Oak Note turned on and connected, start a recording either way:
- On your Oak Note. Press its button once.
- In the app. Tap Record on Home.
A Recording tile on Home shows the timer while your Oak Note records. To stop, press the button on your Oak Note once more, or tap the Recording tile to expand it and tap Stop. On iPhone, the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island also show the recording, with End to stop it.
While you record, tap Open Notepad to write down a detail or add a photo. What you write saves on its own and stays with the note, apart from what was said.
Your Oak Note keeps each recording on itself. If you walk out of range or close the app, nothing is lost: the recording stays on your Oak Note until it reaches your phone.
Tell everyone you're recording and get their permission. Stop if anyone objects.
From your Oak Note to your phone
When a recording ends, it transfers to your phone on its own while your Oak Note is connected. Home shows it as Transferring, with its progress. Keep the app open and your phone near your Oak Note until it finishes.
- Fast transfer. On iPhone, a recording can come across faster over your Oak Note's own Wi-Fi. Tap Fast transfer, then Start, and choose Join when your phone asks to join your Oak Note's Wi-Fi. Keep the app open and your phone unlocked. Internet access may pause during the transfer, and your phone leaves your Oak Note's Wi-Fi when it finishes. If fast transfer can't start, your recording is safe: tap Continue transfer to carry on at the usual speed.
- Queued. When several recordings are waiting, one transfers at a time and the others show Queued with Waiting to import audio…. They follow on their own.
- Transfer paused. If the transfer stops, the recording stays on your Oak Note. Tap Continue transfer to pick it up again.
- Recording in progress. A transfer waits while your Oak Note is recording and carries on by itself when the recording ends.
Import
Audio recorded elsewhere becomes a normal note too. Go to Settings → Import audio and choose a source:
- From Files. Any audio file saved on your phone.
- From Photos. Oak Note takes the audio from a video. The video itself is unchanged.
- From Voice Memos (iPhone). In Voice Memos, select a recording, tap More (…), then Share, and choose Oak Note.
- From another app. Find the audio or video file, choose Share, Send a copy, or Open in, then choose Oak Note.
Import one file at a time. Each file becomes its own note, and Oak Note can't merge, trim, or split audio.
What happens next
Every recorded note moves through these stages on Home:
- Recording. Your Oak Note is recording.
- Transferring. The recording is coming from your Oak Note to your phone.
- Processing. Oak Note writes the transcript, the summary, and the to-dos.
- Ready. The note shows its title, and everything in it is ready to read and search.
An imported note starts at Processing.
A note that can't move right now shows Waiting, with one line saying why, and carries on by itself when it can. See Home for what each stage means.
You don't need to watch it. Once a note reaches your phone, processing continues when you're online, and your Audio storage setting decides whether its audio is also kept online.
